Summer in Chautauqua

Company members Kara Wilkes, Joseph Watson, Randolph Ward, Anna Gerberich
and Ian Grosh pose for a picture before going out to dinner together in Chautauqua.

NC Dance Theatre’s Charlotte performance season begins in September, but the Company begins its work long before then, preparing performances for you to enjoy. Each summer the Company takes up residency in Chautauqua, N.Y., at the Chatuauqua Institution. This year the Company began working in Chautauqua on July 14, and they will present their final performance on August 9, with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.

According to the Chautauqua Institution’s website, the Institution is “a non-for-profit organization that serves as a community, a center, and a resource where the human spirit is renewed, minds stimulated, faith restored and the arts valued.” Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux has been artistic director for the dance program at Chautauqua for the past 26 years. Each summer he, along with Associate Artistic Director Patricia McBride and NC Dance Theatre 2 Program Director Mark Diamond, travels to Chautauqua to head the dance program.

During the Company’s recent Dance Innovations performance they performed Mark Diamond’s Bolero, Dwight Rhoden’s Verge and Twyla Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs. “Technique is virtually a synonym for the Bonnefoux name, and these young dancers demonstrated a remarkable technique which made every movement seem perfect. It resulted in a thrilling evening of dance,” wrote Robert W. Plyler in his review of Dance Innovations for The Chautauquan Daily.

“Coming to Chautauqua each year is so great for the Company. It allows us to reconnect and work on performances we will present in Charlotte the coming season,” said Bonnefoux. “The Company has great success in Chautauqua, but we also really look forward to returning to our home audience in Charlotte.”
