North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance offers a variety of opportunities for the serious dance student to train at the pre-professional level. Students may audition at any time during the year for any of the following programs either by video, at one of the summer intensive audition sites around the country or in person at our studios in Charlotte. Students registered in any of the programs listed below are eligible for college credit through UNC Charlotte.

Pre-Professional Division
The Pre-Professional Division is open to students by audition only and offers intensive study in ballet, pointe, male and female variations, pas de deux, men’s technique, modern, and jazz. Students train with some of the dance world’s most renowned instructors such as Patricia McBride, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Dwight Rhoden, Mark Diamond and Kathryn Moriarty. Students have the opportunity to perform with NC Dance Theatre as well as with their own performing company, the North Carolina Dance Theatre Repertory Ensemble, an honor company with RDA/SERBA.

Conservatory Program
The Conservatory Program is an all day study program offering students the opportunity to integrate their academic studies and dance training. Ballet technique classes are offered each morning with supplementary classes in contemporary ballet, Pilates and composition. Regular technique classes in ballet, pointe, pas de deux, variations, modern and jazz are then attended in the late afternoon. Students enrolled in the Conservatory Program have the opportunity to perform with NC Dance Theatre and the Repertory Ensemble. Academics are offered through the Indiana University High School correspondence program, a highly accredited college preparatory program. Students work on their studies before and after their dance classes each day utilizing the various textbooks and on-line programs that Indiana University offers. The School of Dance also provides local tutors for assistance to the Conservatory students and has wireless internet access for laptop use on the premises. Students may also attend the Northwest School of the Arts (NWSA) for their academic studies and still participate in the Conservatory Program. Home schooled or part-time college students are also eligible for this program.

Trainee & Apprentice Program
Trainees and Apprentices and have the opportunity to work and perform with NC Dance Theatre as well as with the School of Dance’s student performing company. These dancers continue training in the Pre-Professional Division of the School of Dance as members of the all-day Conservatory Program. Students in this program have the opportunity to take Company class on a rotating basis and are matched with a mentor from the Company. They also learn how to write a resumé and make an audition video. Apprentice positions are given to the most technically advanced students. Some Company apprentices are paid a stipend for the year. Trainees and Apprentices are considered for future employment with the Company and NC Dance Theatre 2.

NC Dance Theatre/ UNC Charlotte Professional Training Certificate in Dance
NC Dance Theatre and UNC Charlotte offer a Professional Training Certificate in Dance, equivalent to 16 elective credit hours. Students train, rehearse and perform with a professional school and company while pursuing their undergraduate degree. This is the only professional program in North Carolina that offers such certification in conjunction with a major university. The Certificate Program expands the range of opportunities for those who desire a college education as well as a high level of professional ballet training.
