SUMMER Dance Camps

Storybook Camps Ages 3-6

Favorite storybook tales come to life through dance, music, crafts and performance. Each week-long camp meets from 9 am until 12 noon, Monday through Friday. The week culminates with a fun performance on Friday.

  • Cinderella & the Prince
    Ages: 3 – 4
    Dates:  June 16 – 20
    Time: 9 AM – 12 PM
    Location: Center for Dance, 701 N Tryon Street
    Information: Join us as we learn about Cinderella, her charming Prince, the ugly stepsisters and the magical fairy godmother. Set to the beautiful music of Prokofiev, campers experience this fairy tale through movement, dramatic play, dress-up and crafts. Campers will also read the story of Cinderella and watch a professional performance video of the NCDT Company. As a special treat, a NCDT dancer visits the camp as Cinderella to perform and sign autographs. The week’s activities culminate in a grand finale performance as the Cinderella campers are re-united with their Prince Charming.
    Supplies:  Students should bring a snack and water bottle each day.
    Dress Code:  Girls should wear a solid color leotard, pink convertible tights, pink leather ballet shoes, and hair pulled back (bun or ponytail).  Boys should wear a solid color t-shirt, black biker shorts, white ankle socks, and black or white leather ballet shoes.

  • The Little Mermaid & Friends
    Ages: 5 – 6
    Dates: July 28 – August 1
    Time: 9 AM – 12 PM
    Location: Center for Dance, 701 N Tryon Street
    Information: The Little Mermaid’s underwater world comes to life in this magical dance adventure! Campers enjoy this fairy tale through dance, dramatic play, music, video, and crafts. As a special treat, a NCDT dancer visits the camp as the Little Mermaid to perform and sign autographs. The camp culminates in a grand finale dance performance of this wonderful children’s tale.

Summer Arts Dance Camp Ages 7-12

Summer Arts Dance Camp is an opportunity for dance enthusiasts ages 7-12 to explore various dance forms and choreography in a day camp experience. The two-week session is a fun and in-depth exploration of the dance arts and campers will venture on various field trips enjoying the rich culture of Charlotte, North Carolina. Campers will be taught by teaching artists who are community based in the Charlotte area. A culminating performance will end the two week excursion by sharing dances choreographed by campers and teaching artists.

    Dates: Session 1: June 9- June 20
    Session 2: August 4 – 15
    Time: 9 AM-2 PM (Early drop off is available)
    Location: Center for Dance, 701 N Tryon Street

    CLASS LISTING
    Dance forms explored at Summer Arts Dance Camp include but not limited to:

    Ballet basics- Campers will be introduced to ballet technique, balance, and strength.
    Creative Movement- Campers will explore time, energy, body and space.
    Jazz- Campers will be introduced to traditional movement in the jazz form.
    Hip Hop- The focus will be on rhythm and syncopated movement and exploring the Hip Hop culture.
    Musical Theatre- Campers will be able to discover acting, singing and dancing.
    African- Campers will learn traditional forms from the Western Region of Africa.
    Choreography- With the help of professional teaching artists, campers will create choreography inspired by Charlotte, North Carolina.
    Costume Design- Students will be able to design and construct their own costume.

    FIELD TRIPS
    Campers will have the opportunity to venture out on some of the following field trips.

    Discovery Place- Discover science and technology through creative, interactive learning.
    Levine Museum- Guided tour of Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers: History of Charlotte.
    NASCAR Hall of Fame- Experience a pit crew challenge. During a fun experience, campers will understand the importance of technology advances in the evolution of the pit stop and its impact on the outcome of the race.
    Mint Museum- Tour 3 dimensional craft & design exhibits.
    Harvey B Gantt Center- A guided tour of art and history of African American contributions.
    Bechtler Museum- Campers will be able to vView the architecture of Mario Botta and tour the Bechtler museum building.
    Imaginon- Experience the Once Upon A Time exhibit based on fairy tales.
    Studio 345- Explore photography and digital media in a fun, interactive experience.
    Cultural Scavenger Hunt- Campers will have the chance to win a pizza party by exploring Charlotte’s creative core with a fun uptown scavenger hunt.
    McColl Center for Visual Art- Work closely with visual artist in residency, Jon Prichard.

    Supplies: Campers should bring lunch daily along with water bottle.
    Dress Code: Campers should wear comfortable clothing.
    Price: $400 for 2 weeks. (Price includes: fieldtrips, t-shirt and daily snacks)

  • Extended Afternoon Excursion
    Ages: 7-12
    Dates: Session 1: June 9- June 20
               Session 2: August 4 - 15
    Time: 2 PM – 5 PM
    Location: Center for Dance, 701 N Tryon Street
    Information: Extended Afternoon Excursion complement activities campers have worked on during the day, and includes daily activities, movement explorations as well as fieldtrips to the Aquatic Center.
    Supplies: Campers will need to bring a bathing suit, towel, bag and water bottle
    Dress Code: Campers should wear comfortable clothing.
    Price: $180 for two weeks (Price includes field trips to the Aquatic Center)
