Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte – A Gala Evening

Over 500 guests attended North Carolina Dance Theatre’s Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte Gala at the Knight Theater on Saturday, February 23. Chaired by Midge Barron and Hugh McColl Jr., the event raised $350,000, with almost $75,000 going to support charities selected by the “stars.”

Business leaders were paired with North Carolina Dance Theatre company members. The leaders included Belk CEO Tim Belk, Tera Black of the Charlotte Checkers, Bank of America’s Charles Bowman, Wells Fargo’s Julie Caperton, NFL veteran Muhsin Muhammad, and Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s Paula Vincent. Carolinas HealthCare System’s Michael Tarwater performed with a dancer from Metropolitan Ballroom.

Two winners were named. The judges - Jerry Richardson, Maureen O’Boyle and Scott Provancher  - selected Michael Tarwater and his partner Tatiana Kazakova. The pair performed a Cha Cha and scored all 10’s. Charles Bowman and his partner Melissa Anduiza won the People’s Choice award for raising the most funds.

The following charities were represented by the stars: Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Charlotte Checkers Charitable Foundation , Char Meck Library Foundation, Council for Children’s Rights, Gift of Adoption of the Carolinas, Levine Cancer Institute and Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation.

North Carolina Dance Theatre opened the Dancing with the Stars competition with a ballet by Sasha Janes, called At First Sight and closed the competition with an energetic performance of Dwight Rhoden’s The Groove. After a standing ovation, guests were invited to join the dancers onstage to dance along with the band the Big Blast.
