The Children’s Division offers classes in ballet, modern, jazz and musical theater dance to boys and girls ages 7–10. Students in this division, age 9 and above, are offered the opportunity to perform with North Carolina Dance Theatre in Nutcracker and other full-length ballets such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Snow White. Year-end Spring Student Performances are held at the Booth Playhouse in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.

Ballet 1 (ages 7–8)
A traditionally structured ballet class incorporating the next level in the classical ballet syllabus. Students learn to do a full barre and centre work. More challenging steps are introduced with an emphasis on musicality, body alignment, technique and overall strengthening.

Modern 1 (ages 7–8)
A first introduction to modern dance. Students explore various movement styles, spatial relationships and rhythmic patterns in a structured class environment. Students will begin to explore individual creative expression through guided exercises.

Jazz 1 (ages 7–8)
Students learn rhythm, syncopation, isolation and improvisation in this introductory class. Basic jazz vocabulary and technique are taught and individual expression and style are encouraged. Students gain strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination while dancing to upbeat music of today.

Ballet 2 (ages 9–10)
An increased level of technical proficiency for barre and centre work in the classical ballet syllabus is the focus for this class. There is a continued emphasis on body alignment, overall strengthening and the usage of French terminology.

Beginning Pointe (age 10–2nd year Ballet 2 students)
This class is designed to develop proper strength and alignment for the demands of pointe work. Students will learn the fundamentals of buying, preparing and wearing pointe shoes. Beginning exercises at the barre are incorporated.

Musical Theater Dance (ages 9–16)
Musical Theater Dance exposes students to various theatrical dance styles and performance techniques, focusing on expression, character development, and quality of movement. Students will learn combinations from various musical theater productions. Singing is not required.

Boys Scholarship Class (ages 8–10)
A class for young men to explore dance in an all male environment. Stretching, strengthening, muscle coordination and musicality are all emphasized through an introduction to a variety of dance styles. Sponsors underwrite the class costs to allow talented young men the opportunity to try dance for no cost. An audition is required for admission. Click here for more information.

All Ballet 1, Ballet 2, Ballet 3, Ballet 4 and Pre-Professional Division female students are required to wear a high bun on the crown of the head for class. No bangs, loose ends, ponytails or ornamentation is allowed. Please use a hair net to keep fly away ends in place. This is in keeping with the tradition of classical ballet academies around the world.
