Congratulations NC Dance Theatre Repertory Ensemble on Your SERBA Success!

Twenty-five dancers from the NC Dance Theatre Repertory Ensemble, the School's top level student performing company, just returned from the four-day Regional Dance America/Southeastern Regional Ballet Association Festival held in High Point this year. The students performed four ballets chosen by world-renowned choreographer, Kathryn Posin, during a highly competitive adjudication process that took place earlier this year. Twenty-three other student ballet companies from 10 states also participated in the Festival.
Ms. Posin's adjudication report of the Repertory Ensemble:

"Here at last is the shining academy one hopes for under the enthusiastic, watchful and expert guidance of Darleen Callaghan who is directed by Artistic Director, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. In a large high-ceilinged studio with an excellent accompanist, Kazuko Adachi, twenty-two young dancers, including four men, stand at center barres with long slim, carefully tended and honed bodies, the bodies that are required if ballet is to be performed on the professional level. The hips are narrow and full rotation of the main muscles has been achieved, the instep of the foot reveals powerful arches that are visible on the first tendu. The class is conducted by the droll and brilliant Mark Diamond who manages to call out at triple speed the exercises they already know for this abbreviated class. This activates a flurry of marking in the hands of dancers and immediately produces known combinations of complexity and usefulness. Mr. Diamond seems to know how much of what is required to get today's result. A full class is delivered in 45 minutes. The center grand allegro is long; thirty-two counts and requires stamina and strength. It becomes apparent that there are two or three beautiful and technically advanced girls amongst the others. Two or three who are given the extra special gift and have worked, nourished in this right place to develop at age 16 into utterly bewitching dancers."

Besides this wonderfully supportive report, our dancers also received various awards and scholarships at the Festival. Each company was allowed to send only five dancers to the Scholarship Awards Class. Out of 75 dancers, two of our five received scholarships and a third was offered one but could not attend due to the dates of the program. Here are the Scholarship Award winners:

Allyssa Bross - $500 cash scholarship to go toward her summer intensive at the School of American Ballet in New York City.

Sarala Mahlin-Korn - Full tuition scholarship to go toward her summer intensive at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School in Seattle, WA.

Ben Ingle - Full tuition scholarship to the Alabama Dance Theatre's summer intensive, but unable to accept the offer due to his previous commitment to the Boston Ballet School's summer program.

Awards were also given to choreographers whose works were shown on the Festival performances. Madeline Guerdat was first runner up for the Emerging Choreographer Award and Guerdat will become the winner and recipient of the scholarship to the Craft of Choreography Conference in Seattle this summer if the winner cannot attend.
